Northern Ireland: Belfast and Giant’s Causeway (Day Trip)

Our British Isles Cruise docked in Belfast and we chose to visit Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and Giant’s Causeway.
Carrick-a-Rede Rope bridge connects the mainland to a small island (Carrick-a-rede), it was built by fishermen many years ago and has been reconstructed a few times making it more sturdy and available to visitors.
When I researched this bridge it looked much longer in other pictures/videos, while it was shorter than expected it was still a little frightening to cross on a rope bridge.
To cross the bridge you’ll need to purchase a ticket 🎟 for a certain time. (They were working on selling the these tickets in advance online but at the time of our trip that option was not available. According to their site this is now available) https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/carrick-a-rede
We arrived around 10:00 am and purchased our tickets. We had to wait a few minutes before we could make our way down to the bridge.
We walked down the path to the rope bridge. Enjoying the view along the way.
There is a staff member at each end of the bridge helping and limiting the amount of people on the bridge.
We crossed the bridge and visited the small island for 15-20 minutes and took pictures.
This stop took almost 2 hours and I hadn’t allowed for that much time, so we were now behind schedule. 😬
Our next stop was Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is an amazing site to see.
We arrived and quickly made our way down the road to see this natural phenomenon.
The walk down was about 15-20 minutes, and it was a somewhat steep decline. We made it to the bottom as quick as we could because our day was filled and we were behind schedule.
At the bottom we saw a bus that we could have taken and thought about taking it back up the steep road, however the line to get on the bus was quite long.
The formations were amazing and I’ve never seen anything like it.
We took our pictures, took in the scenery, and then started back up.
There is a visitor center that has an entrance fee but it is not necessary to visit unless you need the restroom. The bus we didn’t take I believe was only a few pounds. If I had to do it over, I would have allowed for at least 90 min at this stop.
We left Giant’s Causeway and drove by Dunluce Castle and headed to a local place for lunch.
After lunch we drove through Belfast and looked at all the political murals around the city. We had a driver who grew up in Belfast and he filled our drive through the city with stories of the prior conflict and the resolutions afterwards.
We look forward to visiting Belfast in the future and visiting more of the sites.
